The town of Batley and the towns and villages of the Spen Valley and Birstall make up the parliamentary constituency of Batley & Spen.

It is made up of Batley, Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike and their surrounding villages, including  Birstall and Liversedge.

Industrially it is known now and historically for its textile mills, coal mining and a broad range of engineering. It is now a major centre of the bed manufacturing industry.

The constituency was formed in 1983 and has been amended twice in boundary reviews. It was a Conservative seat for 14 years and Labour since 1997. Jo Cox won the 2015 general election with the highest majority the seat has ever known.

It forms part of the district of Kirklees and includes the council wards of Batley East, Batley West, Birstall & Birkenshaw, Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike and Liversedge & Gomersal.
