MP calls for action over high risk road

Batley & Spen MP Jo Cox is demanding to know what the government plans to do to improve the safety on a local road that is ranked one of the most dangerous in the country.

The A643, which goes from Brighouse to Morley and passes through Scholes, Cleckheaton, Gomersal and Birstall, is ranked as the most high risk route in Yorkshire by the Road Safety Foundation.

Mrs Cox, who has written to the Transport Secretary to raise the issue, said:

“There is national and local responsibility for highways, through Highways England and councils. But with more and more government cuts budgets starting to bite, particularly at council level, what is the knock on effect on the safety of our highways?”

“I want the government to explore precisely why this route is so high risk and what can be done to make it safer, in partnership with Highways England and the three local authorities in question.

“Much of this route is in Batley & Spen and it is fair to assume that large number of my constituents are using it every day. I want to know from ministers what they, and the Highways England will do to address what the Road Safety Foundation has highlighted.”

Mrs Cox also raised another issue highlighted in the report – that crashes on England’s motorway and major road network cost £2.1billion between 2011 and 2013.

“This is a very important consideration – it would be very interesting to know how much of this cost could be offset by investment in our roads and in particular in road safety,” she added.
